  1. A Labiatae is a family of 3,000-4,000 species 
  2. of flowering plants found worldwide. The 
  3. stems are often quadrangular in sections, 
  4. with leaves arranged in opposite pairs at 
  5. right angles to the next pair. The plants are 
  6. often covered with hairs and glands that emit 
  7. an aromatic fragrance. Species include basil, 
  8. marjoram, oregano, peppermint, salvia, and 
  9. thyme.
